India adds 12 new airports solarized with 100% green energy usage, Uttar Pradesh leads the list
With a bold step towards sustainability, over 80 airports in India are now 100% green. It means that since 2014, these airports have been meeting their energy requirements from green energy sources. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol stated and highlighted country’s bold steps towards sustainable living and meeting as much energy demands from renewable energy as possible.
These airports are some of the biggest and busiest airports in the country from cities such as Kochi, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Hubli and more. While the Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad airport have achieved Level 4+ and higher recognition as carbon-neutral status granted from the Airports International Council (ACI).

Solar-Powered Airports in India
In 2024, India’s major airports have implemented 12 major solar projects across the country. It includes projects in states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Among them Uttar Pradesh leads with a total of 8 airports with 8 airports in cities including Kanpur, Agra, Kushinagar, Varanasi, Bareilly, Prayagraj, Meerut, and Gorakhpur.
It is followed by Gujarat with 7 airports with cities including Jamnagar, Vadodara, Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Bhuj, Rajkot, and Kandla. Next comes Maharashtra with 5 airports with cities including Kolhapur, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, and Mumbai. Next comes Tamil Nadu with 5 airports in Tuticorin, Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy, and Chennai, along with Karnataka with 4 airports in Mysuru, Belagavi, Hubli, and Bengaluru.
Ministry of Civil Aviation’s New Green Initiative
The Airport Authority of India, in order to promote green energy usage, has directed private airport operators with several measures. It includes solar power plant installation for on-site energy generation, procurement of green energy through open access, adoption of energy-efficient designs and system via electric vehicles, HVAC systems, baggage handling and lightings.
The new Atma Nirbhar Bharat Vision has also saved over Rs. 868.1 Crore with reduced fuel usage and flight time. Since August 2023, this new initiative has also reduced carbon emissions of 188,538.5 tonnes of CO2. The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) has also focused on expenditure on carbon neutrality and various green energy projects while keeping the tariffs in check for the major airports in India.
